CRS is delighted to present M³ (Mutual Mentorship for Musicians)’ Winter Solstice 2021 Cohort member Jessica Ackerley (guitar) with Sarah Manning (saxophone) and Alma Laprida (tromba marina) on June 18, 2023 at 5pm in the award-winning White Room at CRS. An audience Q&A will take place following the concert.

This trio’s music is mostly centered around improvisation with a melding of modern jazz and ambient music. But the ensemble is highly unique with the addition of the string instrument tromba marina, especially in this context because it was originally an instrument for Rennaissance music.

Tickets are $20 general admission and $10 for students and are available in advance on eventbrite.com. If not sold out, tickets will also be available at the door for cash only. Some seating may be on blankets on the floor. 

The concert will take place in the award-winning White Room at CRS. Please note that the venue is accessible only via a flight of stairs and is not wheelchair accessible. Proof of vaccination is not required but the wearing of masks is encouraged.

The White Room at CRS is located between 12th & 13th streets, above Think Coffee, in Manhattan. The nearest subway station is 14th St / Union Square (4/5/6, N/R/Q/W, L).

A body of uninterrupted work beginning in the mid-seventies defines William Hooker as one of the most important composers and players in jazz. As bandleader, Hooker has fielded ensembles in an incredibly diverse array of configurations. Each collaboration has brought a serious investigation of his compositional agenda and the science of the modern drum kit. As a player, Hooker has long been known for the persuasive power of his relationship with his instrument. His work is frequently grounded in a narrative context. Whether set against a silent film or anchored by a poetic theme, Hooker brings dramatic tension and human warmth to avant-garde jazz. His ability to find fertile ground for moving music in a variety of settings that obliterate genre distinctions offers a much-needed statement of social optimism in the arts.

Touch: Soul and Service is a work directed and composed by William Hooker for music, poetry, dance, and film.

Following a sequence of four events which include original compositions for duet/trio and film accompaniment, this is the third part of a series of multi-disciplinary projects that William Hooker has presented at Roulette. Each “company” has been honored to present different personnel. The art of spoken word is performed, but it’s from a different location on the stage.

This performance marks the premiere of a new film created by Hooker and acclaimed filmmaker Phill Niblock, accompanied with a live score performed by Hooker (solo drums).
